The Tension between Intuitive Infinitesimals and Formal Mathematical Analysis

چکیده
we discuss the repercussions of the development of infinitesimal calculus into modern analysis, beginning with viewpoints expressed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and relating them to the natural cognitive development of mathematical thinking and imaginative visual interpretations of axiomatic proof.

Teaching Calculus with Infinitesimals
Synopsis This article argues that first semester calculus courses for non-mathematics majors should be taught using infinitesimals. This applies to both high school and undergraduate calculus courses. The use of infinitesimals in calculus, though more intuitive than the approach developed in the 19 th century, has been controversial for over two millennia. However, in the 20 th century their us...
متن کاملThe Ghosts of Departed Quantities
Nonstandard analysis is the branch of mathematics concerned with constructing a number system that includes infinitesimals. These are numbers smaller than any real number yet still greater than zero. Although nonstandard analysis was developed in 1966 by Abraham Robinson, it is based off of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s construction of the calculus, created some 300 years earlier. Nonstandard ana...
متن کاملAcquiring Abstract Geometrical Concepts: the Interaction between the Formal and the Intuitive
The acquiring of formal, abstract mathematical concepts by students may be said to be one of the major goals of mathematics teaching. How are such abstract concepts acquired? How does this formal knowledge interact with the students' intuitive knowledge of mathematics? How does the transition from informal mathematical knowledge to formal mathematical knowledge take place? This paper reports on...
متن کاملOn the Foundations of Nonstandard Mathematics
In this paper we survey various set-theoretic approaches that have been proposed over the last thirty years as foundational frameworks for the use of nonstandard methods in mathematics. Introduction. Since the early developments of calculus, infinitely small and infinitely large numbers have been the object of constant interest and great controversy in the history of mathematics. In fact, while...
متن کاملQuantitative Questions on Attack-Defense Trees
Attack–defense trees are a novel methodology for graphical security modeling and assessment. The methodology includes visual, intuitive tree models whose analysis is supported by a rigorous mathematical formalism. Both, the intuitive and the formal components of the approach can be used for quantitative analysis of attack–defense scenarios. In practice, we use intuitive questions to ask about a...
